We all must grow the eff up & stop our whining.
Don't mean to belittle us but... we have to face reality, friends.
I hear it from all directions. And in all kinds of tones. The angry. The indignant. The oppressed. And the depressed. The disappointed. The privileged. The poor. The vets. The newbies. And… the list continues.
How long can we expect such a situation to go on? Why don’t they get it? Why don’t WE?
We all want someone to take care of us. Yes, to respect us, but generally we want more than just that. Filmmakers seem to always want others to recognize their genius. Or at least their talent. Spot their gifts. And serve them. Yes, many out there think they are better than. Better than you. Better than me. Certainly better than the others.
And so many want to go back to… the way it was. They think that was the way it was “supposed to” work. Ah… those days… with multiple buyers, so many ways to thread a deal, and real upside if it worked. And really there wasn’t that much competition, because they controlled who got in the door. They liked their power and privilege, so they want it to go back that way.
Really? Didn’t they get the note?
Didn’t you? I sure did. Things change. What else are you going to count on, if you can’t count on that? Change. And change, they have.
We are talking about distribution today, friends. Distribution in the FKATheFilmBiz that is. What else could I be talking about in this day and age? In these craaaazy times?
Gather round. I think you know this song and this time I need you to sing along.
This is about the fact that we all have take responsibility for the marketing and distribution of our films, like or not. And the more you moan about it, the more we know you are not serious about where we are right now, or your art, your business, or how can we actually build it back better together.
And yes, even some of the smart and the experienced are doing the digging in and refusing to face the facts — but unfortunately they on the wrong side of the line, and I suspect this will mean that this time they will get left behind. So it goes, though; they did get to enjoy their moment in the sun, their moment of splendor in the grass. Didn’t they? I guess they think it is too much to even be asked — asked to take responsibility for the system that gave them so much, for the work that they claim to love, for the community that they have long been part of.
Although they haven’t asked me, I think they are looking at the problem all wrong. And nonetheless I am here to help. Let’s examine this further, shall we?
