Hope For Film

I confess: I failed most of my goals for 2025

I set a high bar and give myself points just for trying

Today, as I write this, is the start of a new year (but I won’t be posting this until later). I am doing my best to grapple with it. I have yet to set my goals for 2026, and maybe I shouldn’t.

But I just came across the goals I set last year, and I know I shouldn’t have, but I had to look. How did I do?

I failed. You know that I did. You probably did too. That may be why you are reading this now, right?

Well, I got two. Out of eight. Sort of.

I didn’t even have to look at the list to know that one of my priorities was that I wanted to reorient myself more towards my own satisfaction. It was almost a mantra for me in 2025. I kept reminding myself of it. Perhaps others did not suspect this of me.

I don’t consider myself a “people pleaser”; that wasn’t what I was trying to solve. At some point in time – I think once I determined I had to make movies, but maybe before that… but still in my early adulthood – I became a bit accomplishment-focused. Prior to that I was perhaps a little more of a hedonist. Or at least more of a pleasure seeker. I was willing to have more fun and certainly pursued it with gusto.

But I grew concerned with “bettering this world” too. I wanted to solve problems; that became FUN. I needed to feel that I mattered and had value. The net result was although I got a lot done, I knew I could be happier – or at least more satisfied. Whereas I can’t say I solved orienting towards my own satisfaction this past year, I know I enjoyed trying to enjoy myself more. And it makes my prospects much brighter for 2026.
