let’s grab that treasure and resurface fast! (and thanks, Meow Wolf, Santa Fe)

I hate to disappoint you, but this is not another article on NonDē.

Today I am looking… mainstream!

I don’t know about you, but I’ve grown increasing fascinated with the happenings in this industry of ours that will allow The Players In The Trad Realm to do what they do oh so well, while also helping the many among them (and elsewhere) to do their business mo’ better and pave the way for a more sustainable system. That’s how it’s going to work.

The mainstream is what most people think is The Entertainment Industry in its entirely. It is just not so, but so be it.

I have been told that Hope For Film is the best organized knowledge base for independent filmmakers on the internet. Not bad for a 100% reader-supported publication. See for yourself and consider becoming a free or paid subscriber today.

But still …. that’s what we are looking at today. So come with me now…

Picture a world where filmmakers hold onto the rights to their work. Okay, now do it again. Say it. “Filmmakers hold onto their IP”. We can have that world. Let’s build on that core principle. After all, it is the world we should have built, could have and would, if only the artists, entrepreneurs, and their supporters all had our act together from the get go. Never too late though… so….

Add on to that picture how one tier of investor could get to stay with the filmmakers, riding along with them and sharing in their success as their careers blossom, while another investor tier stays more liquid, putting their money in last, but getting out first. Two tiers of investors, each with specific desires, each getting what they need, be it continued participation or limited risk.

In this new future era, a wider spectrum of films gets made and exhibited – and a wider range of audience shows up and pays up --because they know they will get something more than a fun night out. And because of that, the trust and confidence between the filmmakers, the films, and the theaters is built and maintained. The windfall from that alone is substantial.

Rights retention. Career capital. Marketing capital. Targeted-audience distro. Slow distro. Community-oriented distro. Six great tactics that we have not been fully utilizing and can carry us to a better biz. And it doesn’t stop there. That’s just the appetizer.

Now let’s look at how this gets done and where it will all lead.
