Funny, I just finished reading the Hope for Film book. Was really inspired and re-energized by it. -not for my own work (that was already the case) but for the sense of what is possible collectively. Reminded me that all the artists and musicians and activists I admire, did incredible work, to be sure. More importantly, it took the shape it did and had the impact did -was even possible in many cases -because they were part of a larger movement! Otoh,as soon as I finished reading, I checked the 2014 publishing date. Pretty disappointing to realize how many of the issues you raise and then list in the "problems/opportunities" appendix have yet to be addressed in any substantial sense. Ok. Lots of work to do. Let's get to it
Still a golden list. 8+ is the sweet spot. Be strategic and stretch the assets and let locations pull double duty. Two-handers are lethal for this kind of build: two leads carrying the spine, a few solid supporting roles, and a scatter of day players drifting in and out with a handful of lines. Lean, flexible, and built to move.
Who has a problem making the film? The problem is presenting it to audiences. For me anyway. And the link between the audience and the making is the key. For me anyway.
Grateful for your beautiful mind and efforts to create change...I love the synchronicity of reading these commandments after being reminded of Dogma 95’s manifesto while just reading Rick Rubin’s new book. A better world - a more compassionate, courageous, generous, soulful, dynamic, peaceful, creative, contemplative and joyous humanity - is possible. Thank you for leading the charge for change 🙏
