And I was one once too – even if I refused to ever believe it back then.
It’s almost sweet. Innocent even…
All those executives thinking they are in “the film business”. All those other folks who went back to Park City one last time dreaming of something they once called “indie”. How about those filmmakers who make just one compromise and another, thinking this is some “sort of one for them and then one for me” as they never truly get pass “Go”? Sad.
What happens when you can no longer see the forest for the trees? What happens when you are so far off the path, you’ve ended up in another continent altogether? If you have been staring at the shadows all along, how can we bring you out into the daylight?
I’ve tried to write the “lemme tell you where we now are” post before. You know, “get your head out of your ass, pal!”. That’s where this one started too. I was looking for the defining attributes for this time we are now living in, or rather what those characteristics were for this thing of ours, this thing that was formerly known as The Film Biz, 2026 edition.
When I consider what I would call “The Givens”, I feel all of us laboring away in the cinema mine can no longer see film as a stand-alone industry. Or at least we shouldn’t be able to. The truth is we’ve all been coopted. We are part of something bigger and it feels like that something is a bit of a monster. A nasty horrible immoral short-sighted monster.
We need to examine the real beast we are working for. We need to examine the beast we were raised with too. And we need to examine what rules the life blood that nourishes them both are. Let’s do all that right now, okay?
